Checklists and Tips

Please check that you have done the following before turning in any APA citations.

 • References at the top
 • Use a hanging indent, and align left.
 • Be sure you are citing using the "Journal Article" form in Scrible.
 • Use sentence-case capitalization for the article title.
 • Capitalize the first word after a colon or semi-colon.
 • Write the FULL name of the journal article.
 • Don't forget the volume and issue (if available).
 • Include the page range or article number. (No article number and no page range = list pages 1-?)
 • Article number must have the word "Article" in front.
 • Include the DOI unless it is unavailable - then list the permanent link.
 • PubMed and Elsevier are NOT journals. PubMed is a database and Elsevier is a publisher. Do not list these as journals.

For all in-text citations in relation to the reference list:

 • The author name/organization name/title in the parenthetical citation matches the first word(s) in the corresponding reference exactly.

 • Every in-text citation matches only ONE reference. Follow guidelines for assistance with references that start with the same name or same name/year, etc.

 • Spelling of all author names are the same in parenthetical citations and the corresponding reference.

 • Every publication year in the parenthetical citation matches the publication year in the corresponding reference.

 • Every reference is cited in the text. Either remove those references that are not cited in the text or cite them in the text somewhere.

 • Every reference with a single author is cited in the text as a single author. (Smith, 2022)

 • Every reference with two authors is cited in the text as two authors using an ampersand. (Smith & Jones, 2022)

 • Every reference with 3 or more authors is cited in the text as the first author’s last name et al. (Smith et al., 2022)

For all in-text citations in general:

 • Each citation has a comma separating author and year. (Author, year)

 • Every parenthetical citation containing multiple sources is listed in alphabetical order with each source separated by semicolons. (Jones, 2022; Smith et al., 2022; Zander et al., 2022)

 • All group authors (organizations/corporations) are written out in full the first time they are cited in the text, then the acronym is used in all subsequent in-text citations. (Environmental Protection Agency, 2022) becomes (EPA, 2022)

To italicize something yourself in Scrible:

 • You have to code it: Write around the words your want italicized. (For example: This is the Journal Title)
