Honors U.S. History: Q4 Research Paper

Over the past few years, the United States has been roiled by events that have challenged our country’s stability, both at home and abroad.  The issues that are emerging today will shape your lives as you move toward adulthood and beyond the walls of Oak Park and River Forest High School.  With this assignment, you will have the opportunity to explore one of these topics in a way that moves past scratching the surface.  Years from now, you will be able to look back at your work and reflect on how you grappled with one of the key issues that is defining our times.

 

OPTION 1: Is the United States entering into a “New Cold War” with Russia?

  • In order to answer this question, you will need to explore issues including, but not limited to:

    • The key events and characteristics of the Cold War that followed World War II

    • The fall of the Soviet Union and its impact on modern Russia

    • American and Russian involvement in key flashpoints around the world today (Ukraine, Syria, etc.)

    • The 2016 American Presidential Election and the broadening controversies that have ensued

 

OPTION 2: Are the disparities in funding between public schools like Oak Park and River Forest High School and high schools in the Chicago Public Schools system, less than a mile away in the Austin neighborhood, constitutional under the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution?

  • In order to answer this question, you will need to explore issues including, but not limited to:

    • The historical context of the passage of the Fourteenth Amendment

    • Courts’ interpretations of the Fourteenth Amendment (in the Jim Crow Era and beyond)

    • The history behind segregation in the Chicagoland area (and between the Oak Park and Austin communities specifically)

    • How public schools are funded in the State of Illinois

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Length: 5-7 Pages (Double Spaced)

  • Minimum 8 Sources in Works Cited

  • Rubric Attached

Final Paper needs to be submitted electronically to both:

  • Google Classroom

KEY REMINDERS:

  • Assignments related to this paper will be the only points in the “Project” portion of the Gradebook for Quarter 4.This portion of the Gradebook makes up 25% of your Semester Grade.

  • Academic integrity and the ability to distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate sources are essential.We will be spending two days in the library to help support you in these areas.If you have any question about either of these issues, do not hesitate to reach out and ask for help.That being said, plagiarism will result in a ZERO for this assignment.

  • Pace yourself! You have over a month to complete this assignment, and if you break your work apart in order to meet the deadlines above, you will have more than enough time to turn in the phenomenal work that you are capable of!
