Your thesis should answer the question or controversy you are addressing in your paper. You should include “road map” categories to give the reader an idea of the structure of your paper. The roadmap categories are the arguments (and counter-arguments, if applicable) you will address in your paper.

 

Please create a running head for your outline following APA format. See Purdue OWL for a sample paper with a running head and google classroom for a sample outline. Your outline should not just be a list of topics.  Each section of your paper should be working toward your thesis.  Therefore, your outline should indicate each argument you will make and the evidence you will use to prove it. Evidence should come from psychological studies (including meta-analyses) and may involve statistics or results.  Cite the source of your evidence in APA format so that you can keep track of where you found each of your pieces of evidence.  Your outline should be complete enough that I can clearly understand how you envision writing the paper at this point.  Following is a suggested format (though not double-spaced) with one example argument and piece of evidence. You may use bullets instead of roman numerals:

 

  1. Introduction (use bullet points or letters for the first part of the outline, end with a thesis, which should be a complete sentence)
    1. Grabber to get the interest of the reader- may be a statistic or fact about the topic
    2. Background on the issue and the debate surrounding the issue, showing all sides of the debate
    3. Thesis- should be a complete sentence

 

  1. Although the scapegoat theory of prejudice may explain certain periods or instances of increased racism following negative events, it is not the best explanation for the prevalence of racism today. (Note this is a counter-argument; you may or may not choose to have counter-arguments in your paper).
    1. In one study, researchers found that students who had recently experienced failure would often attempt to regain their self-esteem by putting down another person (Cialdini & Richardson, 1980).

  4. Subsequent arguments (all must be complete sentences)- you will likely have 8 or more arguments and may have more than three pieces of evidence per paragraph)
  5. Conclusion- just write the word conclusion at the end- you do not need to write this out
